Federal judge confirms that the U.S. is a Judeo-Christian nation!

Another entirely symbolic victory for the religious conservatives.

My whole life I've been close to the evangelical world in one way or another, and I've never for a moment understood why this matters.

  1. I'm with you. It doesn't matter. But to religious conservatives, I see that the "victory" is another step in referring to a Christian code of ethics when ruling on matters such as abortion, gay marriage, etc.
It's obviously problematic because there is no complete code of Christian ethics that we Christians agree upon.

Also, am I the only one who finds the adjective "Judeo-Christian" offensive? I'd be pissed if I were a Jew.

  2. Hmm. If only the Ten Commandments SAID anything about gay marriage or abortion. (I know, there's one about killing, but everyone agrees that killing's bad; the question is what counts as killing.)

I agree, "Judeo-Christian" is a stupid word. It came about as a way of pre-empting those who would (rightly) cry foul when Christians refer to something from the Hebrew Bible as "Christian"...but I don't think I've ever heard it used by actual Jewish people.

  3. What's ironic is that if Christians who wanted something up on a courthouse really thought about it, they'd be going for the shema instead of the 10 commandments. Or something like "Love God first, love others second." A reread of some Bibles just might be in order....
