This conversation between James Carroll and Tom Engelhardt is worth a read.
I've had Constantine's Sword sitting on my shelf for a few years now and keep not getting to it. Here, Carroll meanders a bit but makes some very interesting observations about U.S. religion, foreign policy, and military culture.
Also: I learned something I didn't know, though perhaps you did--according to Carroll, it was Roger Williams, not Jefferson, who first talked explicitly about the concept of separation.
