I wish that Obama was marching in Jena today--as I wish that the other candidates were, along w/ many more white people than actually showed up (one of Diane Rehm's guests this morning said it was about 98 percent black), and, for that matter, me. It's terrible that the political calculus motivates the candidates to maintain a bit of distance and/or prioritize other things, and it's frustrating that they don't just insist on going down there anyway.
Still, I think Jesse Jackson's being a bit hard on Obama. While ideally Obama--and the others--would do more than release statements, his comments themselves are spot on. And it's hard to imagine Jackson's criticism having much effect on the way Obama positions himself as a candidate, as he's already doing an impressive job balancing the different things he represents to different people.

no doubt he has to walk a very fine line, but i was disappointed that it took him about a week to become "outraged." before his statement, he mostly mumbled about "his staff" (his default answer for "i don't know" or "i'm upset") when asked his thoughts.
