"If Obama is a Reaganite, then I am a salamander"

E.J. Dionne on "why the Clintons' assault on Obama is so depressing."

  1. I've been meaning all day to post a link to the Huffington Post headline that read something like "JFK...RFK...Barack Obama," but it looks like it's gone now. A friend of a friend works across the hall from the HP, and apparently he went over to ask Ms. H why she was predicting Obama's assassination and she said she didn't see the problem, and neither had any commenters. Did you see it?

  2. No, didn't see that. I assume it was in reference to Sen. Kennedy's endorsement and speech? I've had that reaction before to lines referring to Obama as some combination of RFK and MLK. It's a terrifying thought.

  3. This Reagan, JFK, and MLK referencing is meant to suggest that Obama has the distinction of being a visionary who leads a groundswell of motivated citzens; as opposed to Clinton, who nicely listens to special interest groups and micromanages her political career. Is that what assassins "aim" at?? Not necessarily, that's why all presidents have the secret service....

  4. these references to Reagan, JFK and MLK are only meant to suggest that Obama is similarly a visionary leading a groundswell of motivated citizens; whereas Clinton nicely listens to special interest groups and micromanages her politics. Assassins don't necessarily aim for visionaries, that's why ALL presidents are set up with the secret service.....

  5. Right, that's the intention, and I agree with the sentiment...but it's the additional, unintended resonance of the headline that gives me chills.
