"If people are dumb enough to pay that much then hallelujah"

That's Rep. Collin Peterson (DFL-MN), chair of the House agricultural committee, on the absurdity of the local and organic food movements. The context is the congressman arguing that organic produce and livestock farmers don't NEED federal assistance--they're obviously doing just fine--so why not give it all to the commodity farmers?

The Democrats--we're supposed to be excited that they're in charge now, remember?--have made it clear they lack the ability/will to bring meaningful reform to our food system, and the consequences for public health, local economies, and the environment will be severe. Five more years till the next farm bill...

  1. in their defense, not all democrats are this ignorant...just the freaking committee chairs. ugh.

my prediction: there will be new, good things in the new bill, and lots of the same, old bad things. but broad reform ain't happening anytime soon.
