Are we supposed to assume he'll be more principled when the political stakes are even higher?

Amid the endless chatter about the presidential race, I've repeatedly noted to friends that, whatever other feelings we have about the three remaining viable candidates, we can rejoice that it looks like our next president will not be pro-torture.

But I may have been overly optimistic. This afternoon, the Senate passed an anti-torture bill but failed to get a veto-proof supermajority. (The president has promised a veto, though these days I suppose that basically goes w/o saying.) Anyway, guess who crashed the Straight Talk Express right into the Capitol steps and stumbled in to vote nay?
